“Expression and action deepen our understanding and appreciation of humanity.”
During the month of February we have spent much of our time exploring African American History. While the International Baccalaureate program’s intent and goals are to weave the history of cultures and people throughout the curriculum, we feel it is vital to intentionally plan experiences and opportunities for our students.
Our central idea during Black History Month is “Expression and action deepen our understanding and appreciation of humanity.”
Across grade levels the following questions began our inquiry:
Why do we have Black History month?
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Inquirers and researches explored many people, topics and events across the curriculum and continue to discuss, question, appreciate, understand and take action.
Our family event on Wednesday included music poetry and a viewing of the film "Hair Love".
Thanks to Mrs. Pohl and Obie Shelton for the music and Ms. Perry for getting us thinking and appreciating while we watched Hair Love.
After viewing Hair Love, we responded to the following question.
What do you love about yourself? Is it a unique feature, something that someone cannot see, or something else about you ?
